"Portraits"

This weeks assignment: Portraits of someone close to you, however, they can not be in the photo. Basically, I took photos of things that are meaningful to my friend Mary, remind me of her, or define her. There's only a few photos but you can really sense her personality through them.

The Guiltiest One

A while ago, you may have read my post about Cindy Sherman, a female photographer known for her self portraits as different characters. Our assignment was to choose one of her photos, describe it, and then create a series of photos reflecting the adjectives we used to describe the original photos. The words we used were:
-Shadows
-Dark
-Hint of color
-Depressing
-Guilt

Beneath each photo is the name of who took the photo, however we all edited them together. Here is our series, named: The Guiltiest One

So, I went apple picking. It was fun. Here are the pictures.

Garry Winogrand was a photographer who lived from 1928-1984. He took pictures of the "oddity" and "unusual" post war America. Something interesting you can notice in his photography is his use of the horizon line. It seems to be tilting in many of his photos, and that gives the veiwer the sense that something is off. In most of his photos, the setting is normal, in fact mostly everything about the picture is normal, EXCEPT for one small thing. Here are some examples:

 

Another important aspect of his photography is the presence of motion. He seems to always capture the picture as someone is moving, or at least not posing. You get the sense, when you look at his photos that no one even noticed he had a camera. That the weird just happened and no one thought anything of it. He once said:

“There is nothing as mysterious as a fact clearly described. I photograph to see what something will look like photographed.”

He didn't plan what he was going to photograph, he just let it happen. And so I was inspired to try his method. My pictures show some slight oddity in the midst of Washington Square as I tried to imitate the works of Garry Winogrand.

The amount of light could completly change the outlook and feeling to a picture. So I set out to capture a feeling with as little light as possible. The results were awesome and powerful. 

Personal Style

My theme this week was personal style. Many people could interpret this in different ways. Painting, drawing, cooking, acting, but I decided to combine two styles into one photograph. The first: my personal style of photography. The second: Geneva Gleason's personal style of fashion. Here are the results:

My goal was to capture her unique attitude and outlook towards herself (I think the first and last picture clearly illustrate her personality!) through my individual "technique" of photography. Thank you Geneva for your modeling and passion for style!
